THE NICOTEENAGERS
The Nicoteenagers are a fuzz driven, melodic band out of Melbourne. Made up of Drew, Lachlan, Luke and Ryan, The Nicoteenagers have been putting a signature on their sound with countless releases over the past year. Hazy Days Music thanks The Nicoteenagers for taking the time out to have a chat.
“First Time’s a Charm” is the latest release by The Nicoteenagers on the 21st of May. It’s a powerful, gritty track stepping it up once again from previous releases “Ravolutre”(Feb 27) & 2019’s album “ A Tale For Two”. What were some of the influences around the time of writing and recording this track? Was the writing process of this single any different to your other songs?
First Time’s a Charm came about pretty quickly compared to some of our other tracks. I was listening to a lot of 90s rock at the time, and the initial idea came about while a good friend of mine and I were jamming after that inspiration struck. We had a finished song about a week later. We recorded it at ArtmiX studio run by another good friend of mine and great engineer Andy Timewell.
Releasing a single during the heart of Australia’s Corona Virus lockdown must have been an interesting decision to make. “First Time’s a Charm” has been growing in popularity and receiving a great deal of positive feedback, also reaching Triple J’s Unearthed #1 played song of the week. Not being able to play shows alongside this release, was there an emphasis on promoting the single harder? Was there ever the thought to hold off releasing the single until life returned somewhat normal again?
First Time’s a Charm talks about determination and the will to never give up. To be honest, it seemed fitting to release this track now more than ever.
Since releasing the album “ A Tale For Two”, the band has been non-stop playing shows, ramping it up towards the end of 2019 and over the summer (residency spots + supporting tours). Frustrating that COVID 19 has put live shows on hold for the moment. Looking back, how has the band been developing its live shows as the gigs have been getting bigger? Has there been a favourite show or tour that stands out?
Yeah, it is frustrating that the shows have stopped but it has given us the time to really level up our live set. We have been working non-stop so that as soon as we can play, we will be back better than ever. As for a favourite show, I’d have to say supporting John Garcia at the Corner earlier this year was one of the coolest experiences of my life. He is such a humble guy and still kicks ass live.
What is planned for the rest of 2020? Can we expect any more releases? Hopefully a show or two?
We have a brand new single ‘Heart in a Hold’ coming out July 30th. The word on the wind says there may be another 3 tracks on the way this year and we will definitely be back on the live scene as soon as we can.
